Viseu is a city in the Central Region of Portugal, serving as the capital of the Viseu District. Located in the southeast mountains of Porto, about 50 kilometers east of the Atlantic Ocean, it is an important agricultural and educational center in the region, boasting several institutions including the Viseu Institute of Technology.
The city of Viseu features a well-preserved historic center with cobblestone streets, winding alleyways, countless Renaissance and Baroque palaces and mansions, as well as remnants of a 15th-century city gate. One of its most famous landmarks is the 13th-century Viseu Cathedral, showcasing Romanesque and Gothic styles, and considered one of the most exquisite buildings in Portugal, adorned with elaborate decorations and a rich collection of religious artifacts.
Named after the most important Portuguese painter of the Renaissance period, Vasco Fernandes, the Grão Vasco Museum is housed in a former 16th-century bishop’s palace, and is one of Portugal’s most significant art museums, showcasing single-paneled altarpieces, metalwork, tapestries, and sculptures from the Renaissance era. The ancient Town Hall, the old market with numerous cafes and specialty shops, and the natural conservation area are all worth exploring.
